So this weekend I finished my final research paper.  I then began Gears 5 and it's a lot of fun. I was initially  thrown by the open world concept but I'm definitely enjoying the change. I'm also playing San Andreas and it's eh. It's hard to enjoy it since the city is so empty and the controls are too clunky.

I'm still playing Darkest Dungeon. I finally have a pretty well optimised town and group of hearty characters so I can finally start taking aluminum or difficult bosses and will hopefully wrap up the game soon. I enjoy it, but I'm definitely ready to move on to something else.

Playing Super Monkey Ball on Switch. It's good.

In a weak moment, I ordered Rage 2 from amazon.com for $10. Just remembered how hellish my Doom 2 experience was (Bethesda game also) so just cancelled at the last second.  Doom 2 was torture, massive download even though I had the disc, had to register with Bethesda and log in each time, it was horrible.

So Bethesday once again rereleased Skyrim. Why don't they remaster Morrowind and Oblivion for modern consoles? I'd buy them.

There never was Morrowind or Oblivion! There was only Skyrim! There will always only ever be Skyrim! Fus-Ro-Dah!

Yeah, that's pretty much what the gaming community thinks these days.  They'll be confused when the next elder scrolls isn't called Skyrim 2. But I can't judge, I was the same way after playing Morrowind.  Damn, that was a good game.

Grammarly just told me this post was 4/5 optimistic, 3/5 friendly and 2/5 confident, so don't feel like you have to respond to my post as my AI "Clippy" friend gives me the feedback loop I need from forums Nyaa

Parenthetically, that would be a good signature!

So Guardians is a great game but very much held up by its great storytelling and pacing, not so much the actual gameplay. It's also a very very by the book AAA game. I addressed my thoughts on gameplay and story in my review, I'll share that section below, your thoughts.

From my Guardians review:

I want to conclude the review by addressing the roles of story and gameplay in games and how many view it differently. For me it’s always been gameplay first but the story can always help tremendously to elevate a game. That’s is clearly the case here, Guardians is just any random average action adventure game but when you add the magic sauce of an excellent story, well written characters, great pacing, all the elements that make a AAA game feel like playing a major movie all of a sudden that average game rises to new levels. I can only go by how much I enjoyed my time playing this game and I had a smile from beginning to end. I laughed out loud plenty of times, I would get giddy with excitement at the idea of where the story was taking the Guardians to next. I would feel heartbreak when one of the characters reveals their most painful memories. It’s why I say gaming could be more powerful than movies or shows, it can do all the things those two can do but they can never place you in control, make you an active participant in the story and that alone makes gaming so much more interesting.

But others don’t feel the same way, I know many players that feel if a developer isn’t going to bother making a game with deep gameplay then it’s a waste of time. Some think a story driven game might be better off leaving behind average gameplay, they might say it just gets in the way. Some people play games in the lowest setting because they find the actual playing to be a chore. And others might be bored of the AAA template this game desperately adheres to. These are all aspects to consider when choosing to play a game like this, if any of what I mentioned above describes your feelings on certain games then maybe this one isn’t for you.

I want it.

Still have the back issues, those suck? Hope it all turns out well.

Finished Guardians, review is being posted. Started Forza Horizon 5, seems fun, lots to do. Not sure I understand why it's an arcade racer that still feels like a sim. When I have an open world in a racing game it's usually with car chases, and boosting and you know arcade stuff.

Potential bowel cancer issues.

...

Hope it's doctors being doctors and not the real thing gg.

I played some good old fashioned couch co-op over the weekend.

My GamePass subscription had lapsed, so I bought Human Fall Flat to continue playing.  Turns out we were 2 stages away from the end of the game.  indecision  Still, it's a great game with clever puzzles and enough wriggle room to 'solve' them by accident.

We also played Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime, which is one of the best couch co-op experiences I've ever played.  Up to 4 people control a spherical spaceship together, where everyone has a small avatar running around inside the spaceship from station to station to man stuff like the propulsion, the shield, the various turrets.  It's great.

This weekend consisted of a LOT of Forza Horizon 5 for me. Also played a bit of Capcom Arcade Stadium. Love me some of that classic arcade goodness from time to time.

I just downloaded Final Fantasy 7: The First Soldier, Square-Enix's attempt at a battle royale game. I'm going in with fairly low expectations, but I did enjoy PUBG for a while so there's potential I will enjoy this too.

Xbox turned 20 years old? That really blows my mind. I still can't see it as anything other than the new console that is nothing more than a test buy Microsoft. No way is this Xbox thing going to be around if another five years.

Yeah time sure flies. I was very much a skeptic when I first heard that Microsoft was entering the console gaming space. That quickly changed though after I got an Xbox and played several games on it including Halo of course.

This particular anniversaary for me seems like even longer away thatn 20 years. Possibly because of broken hardware I have not been able to play my Xbox library reliably for ten years now. Despite trying. https://gameunder.net/gameunderhome/2017/4/2/x-boxing-day
