I had the unpleasant experience of being stuck in grim Fandango last night. I had already turned my phone off and wasn't getting out of bed so I spent an hour and a half being stuck. I stuck balloons of goop in pipes to stick a machine. Then I couldn't open a red tube as it was locked. I'm stumped. It doesn't help that there's no objective reminder. Game also makes you run a lot, has large, pointlessly so, environments.

Still not getting the Grim Fandango love. It has to be one of the worst looking "remasters" ever made. You're expected to pick out objects to interact with among a sea of low resolution pre-tendered graphics that are worse than Donkey Kong Country. The only thing remastered are the character models which look N64 quality. The logic deductions are confusing, coral plus (other end) of rope (which the game gives you no kind of inkling as to it being there or use-able. Punch a hole through playing cards to make a key? There's no logic in these connections.

^ I thougth that was what point and click adventures from that era were all about?  That's like complaining the Super Mario 3D All-stars games have too much jumping in them.

LucasArts adventure games had their own special kind of logic to them. They tended to be a little more absurd compared to other companies that made adventure games like Sierra. You kind of had to go down a list when it came to solving puzzles.

1. Does The logical solution apply here?

2. If the logical solution does not apply, can I try to make a pun out of the items involved to solve the puzzle?

3. Have I talked to every NPC 45 times yet?

4. Have I used every single item in my inventory with everything else on the screen?

5. Is a Three-Headed monkey involved?

6. Have I clicked everywhere and everything? (Ultimately the answer to this is always no)

Anyway, I won't argue that Grim Fandango wasn't overrated. I loved it, but I never thought it was the end all be all of the point and click adventure world, which a lot of critics praised it to be. It was just a super original concept put together by a team with a great sense of humor.

Digging Year two of Grim Fandango. I kinda get that it's camera angles and huge interconnected areas give you the feeling of a cohesive world. It is a bit too big though, running endlessly, with no map. And a lot of items blend into the background. More modern graphic adventures have things like interest points when you hold down a button. Or hint systems. This port is so bare bones. Wish they did a 2d remake as the characters aren't bad.

its not terrible. I never played it originally, came out too late. So I'm coming at it from today's perspective with zero nostalgia and more user friendly expectations. It's okay and given how cheap it was I'm kinda liking it. But I vastly preferred Broken Sword 5.

Happy 25th Birthday to Resident Evil!!!!!

I celebrated by beating RE1 in about 3 hours, still an all time great. So I shared my RE1 first night story again on era. I linked to the thread above, you will find me around post 53 if you want to read it, I have shared the story a few times here. Still my favorite gaming memory. Its kind of sad though that Capcom is celebrating this anniversary while not showing on piece of footage from the PS1 era games, as if they have been erased. And now with the news that PS3 store is going down those games will be lost forever until there is some new port.

There are great articles all over celebrating RE, I'll link to another above. Share any stories you have of this legendary franchise.

MS should buy discord. They'll fuck it up, but still worth it.

So is Discord a big-big thing, or just a big thing?  I don't really use it myself and as with all social media it has totally passed me by.  Would it be worth it for MS to buy them?

Well it sounds like a pretty big thing from what I hear. I’ve only ever used it myself for a bit with us few here.

Year 3 of Grim Fandango. I would never complete this without a guide. Year 2 was so big I spent most of the time sprinting between locations like a marathon. I'm used to a couple of static screens with more self contained puzzles. Speaking of which the puzzles in this game just defy logic most of the time and there and things I would never think to do even if I thought for 100 days. What makes some things worse is that there is very little if any hints or prods in the right direction. The inventory system sucks major ass, having to rotate through every item to get the exact one you want. And the way interactive points blend in with the static backgrounds. There's no pointer so I can't just wave a cursor about to spot points of interest.

Also everyone has skeleton faces so it's hard to remember which character is who. I have to Google up characters I've met before that someone mentions in dialogue.

Finished Grim Fandango. Probably one of my least favourite graphic adventures. The game is too big, yet mostly empty. You spend most of the time sprinting over large areas. And because you are sprinting, Manny doesn't then turn his head to points of interest. The story has a good premise yet descends into bland mobster fare. But the worst thing is that there are lots of puzzles that make no sense. There is no logic behind them. It asks you (or should I say it remains silent and expects you to work out) the most improbable of connections. Why would I ever want to stuff an oily rag into a toaster? How would I know that the only way to disarm a bomb is to fill a bottle with dirty sink water then randomly give it to Glotis who then throws up vomit which can then be frozen? It goes completely over my head. It's also ugly, I know this may have looked good at the time but I'm a 2D man and that would have aged so much better.

There's been rumours flying about concerning the new Switch model's use of DLSS.  It seems like a no brainer really.  If they mean draw is outputting at 4K, count me out.  I don't even own a 4K capable screen.
