I sort of copy pasted this from era, thought I'd share with you guys as well. Here is my thoughts on the first and DC

I am starting with the original standard version, doing a Jill playthrough which is what I almost always do. My history with RE began on day one (or around there) and after playing it I would never be the same. My first night with RE1 is one of my favorite childhood memories and I feel it set the stage for the lover of video games that I am. I grew up with an NES like everyone did back in the day but when the 16-bit wars began you had to pick a side and my dad chose to get me a Genesis. I became a Sega nut, hating on Nintendo, having playground arguments about how Genesis does what Nintendont. Then came time for the 32/64 bit era and Sony announced they are entering the ring, HA this TV company is going to make video games, what a joke. So that Christmas, like the great Sega fan I was, I asked for a Sega Saturn. My older brother asked for Playstation, what a loser. I enjoyed my Panzer Dragoon and Virtua Fighter but I couldn't deny that Playstation had some cool games.
One day my brother came home from some store that had magazines and he said he saw a game preview for this horror game called Resident Evil, coming to the Playstation. Over time I saw many magazines cover this state of the art game. The graphics were incredible, the mature themes were so tantalizing for a 13 year old. My brother being a massive horror movie fan, made it his mission to get Resident Evil day one and I could not wait to try it. The night he bought RE I invited my best friend over for a sleep over, my brother bought both D and RE1, with the intention of starting RE1 at midnight for maximum effect. Our appetizer that night was D, we managed to beat it in two hours, a fine FMV puzzle game but nothing special. I was obsessed with the long box cover (which I still have), reading the manual, learning about Chris and Jill and the rest of the STARS team. We actually waited till midnight to start the game, finally the clock struck 12 and we started it up.
Ah AHHHHHHH BLOOD SPLAT DUN DUN DUN. RESIDENT EVIL! From the opening I was transfixed. My brother picked Chris cause he is a dude of course you pick the dude (not knowing he had no gun and was hard mode). Then the opening intro started and I could not believe I was playing a video game. Real actors, special effects and fun music, Resident Evil was the first big console cinematic game. When that cast of characters started I knew immediately that Barry was my guy and I was going to love to hate that douchebag blond dude, little did I know how legendary he would become.
My brother went first and had no idea how to control Chris. Those first few moments with the controls were hilarious, it was such an alien way to control a game. He stumbled his way into the dining room and eventually reached the first zombie. He had no clue how to use the knife so the zombie slowly ate him while we all screamed in horror. You Died!
It was my turn next and since I read the manual I knew to pick Jill. I loved Barry and Jill's back and forth instantly, Barry's lines to this day are seared into my brain. I got to the first zombie and promptly shot him dead, progress! I then proceeded to explore the mansion, these graphics, this music, this atmosphere, there was NOTHING like this. I reached a hallway that looked like the one in magazines and in the back cover, the dogs were coming. I KNEW the dogs were coming and still when they burst through the window I threw the controller into the air, all of us screaming, I desperately tried to get the controller in time but Jill was dead.

My friend went next and so on all through the night. We found new weapons, got some important keys to go deeper and deeper. We reached Yawn at one point, mindblowing boss at the time. Oh we didn't have a memory card so we had to start over after every death. Eventually my friend and I went to bed but my brother stayed up playing. In the morning he told us he found a way out of the mansion to a smaller guest house and eventually was killed by these horrible reptilian creatures, the hunters. His description blew my mind, how big was this game?! For the next month I was obsessed, I did nothing but play this game over and over. Beat it every which way possible, including unlocking the infinite launcher. It quickly became my favorite game ever up to that point.
My Saturn was left gathering dust, I had broken free of the childish bias behavior and became a fan of gaming, I got my own PS1 later than year. Resident Evil was the first game to show me what the future of video games would be, no longer just games for kids with stages and high scores. They could be full stories, with a movie-like presentation. They could elicit the same emotions the best movies could but go even further with interactivity that put you at the center of the action. At that moment I knew I would be a fan of gaming forever.
-------------------------

I just finished my RE1 playthrough, beat it with Jill, best ending under 2 hours without speed running at all. The game is so easy, I know Chris is hard mode but still, its a pretty forgiving game. I still love the horrible voice acting, has such a charm that was lost in the remake. I will say I can appreciate so much of what REmake did, there seemed to be sections that were so underbaked in this original.
The music really stands out, there are some killer tracks that only play once like the mansion basement song and when Barry knocks out Wesker. The files are really interesting to read, it seems that researchers and workers were trapped in the mansion for over a month after the outbreak, while more and more slowly got infected. What a cool time period that would be to explore in a game, trapped in the mansion, get killed if you try to escape, watch your friends slowly turn. According to the note of John, Ada was on site, so there is a playable character right there. Oh and one note makes mention of White Umbrella, was there a Red Umbrella? Is Blue Umbrella a nod to that note. Fun to look back.
Next I plan to do Chris but in arrange mode on the DC. I played the GOG version for this run, I am kind of upset they removed ink ribbons. I was surprised to see the uncut intro, thats super cool.

I bought the non dual shock version of RE
C at launch mostly for the RE2 demo. Well my favorite game at the time was getting a new version and I get to play the demo of the sequel, it was the easiest decision to buy. I still have vivid memories of playing the RE2 demo for the first time, how mindblowing the Raccoon City streets were, how improved the models and their animation was. I replayed that demo a million times, RE2 quickly became my most anticipated game ever. As for the DC, I had fun with it, I don't go back to arrange mode that often but its a nice extra mode to have.
...
I just finished my Chris Arrange mode playthrough, what an absolute blast. This is a run I have rarely attempted so I had almost no recollection of where things were plus the added difficulty of Chris made this feel like a first time RE1 run through and man I remember how addicting and fun this game is. There is something so charming and fun to control with this game that is lacking in REmake. Things to note, Chris' handgun, head popping machine. The Hunters were brutal, like 2x the amount in Jill's normal campaign, I died a few times as the ganged up on me and hit stunned me then insta kill. It reminded me why they are THE BEST BOW IN RE. I was in some tight situations, lacking health, needed to get through some tough enemies. I fought mamma spider on danger and survived, made it to the save room after just in time. Those are the moments that make this formula so great.
It was also the first time I have ever played the dual shock version... WTF... serious WTF is this music. Its HORRENDOUS, from start to finish. I cannot believe for a chunk of time this was the version available to people, with garbage music. The classic all time tracks that defined a series was just absent?! What? There are people who only played this version and don't know the classic music??? It's crazy to me. Even the ending credits was ruined!
Anyway DC is a ton of fun, now I want to try some of these randomizers. I am a weirdo that prefers to play the OG to REmake, this game means so much to me, I love every second of playing it. Honestly its probably the game I have beaten the most counting every version of it.
Going be 30 years since the first game. Damn. Still fondly remember going to my local game store and picking up that game on release day. It was in the Big Black Case before they switched over to the jewel cases. Played all day and will never forget getting jump scared by the dogs coming through the windows. Good times.
I am looking forward to reading more entries in this. I feel bad about only having ever played Resident Evil 4 on the GC but I did truly love that game. I tried REmake but I think it was too creepy. I did play some of Resident Evil 5 on PS3 but didn't finish it. Sort of tempted by the "recent" remakes.

I played through REmakes 2, 3 and 4 a couple years ago, and enjoyed them all. Some RE fans were disappointed by 3 being too short, but that didn't bother me at all.

Ok this is going slower for me than I anticipated, now I am not sure I will finish. Well next up is RE2, a game that solidified my love for this franchise. Lets go back to before the DC and the demo disk and to the news about RE2, or what is now RE1.5. I still remember the screenshots and previews in magazines about RE2, a very blue hued modern looking police station and new heroes called Leon and Elza, a biker chick. The game would have way better animations and the characters would show visiable wounds as you played. The screenshots were amazing, I was excited to play any new RE game for sure but the idea of being in the middle of the city outbreak was so good. Easily my most anticipated game at that time. Some months went by and the game got delayed a bit and when it finally resurfaced Elza was gone and in came Claire Redfield, giving us a clear connection to the first game. Gone was the modern cold style of the RPD and in came the more museum look we all love now. The changes were clearly for the better, RE2 began to take shape and the news about two discs with two different scenarios that will interact with each other came out. This was going to to take the chose a character from RE1 to a new level and it absolutely delivered, that zapping system was so well implimented, its sad it never really happened again. I loved how experimental games were back then. I got RE2 the day it came out and played it all weekend. I remember reading some article about how RE2 had a bigger opening weekend than whatever movies came out that weekend. Resident Evil 2 was the series hitting the big time, it was a showcase game for the PS1. I played RE2 countless times, did both scenarios every which way. Unlocked the infinite launcher, did 4th survivor and tofu, which was hard as hell. It's the most complete package of any RE game until RE4, to think it had the different scenarios, it introduced the first battle mode mini game, and it expanded the story about Umbrella so much. RE2 was the series coming out party, RE1 was a great start, it set all the rules for the gameplay and tone of the series but RE2 was really the one that shaped it into the best version of what it could be.
....
RE2 is done, I did Clarie A and Leon B and the Extreme Battle mode. Extreme Battle mode is a great mode, never got to play it before, it really uses the full map well and pushes you to really use all your weapons well. Its still not Mercs level but a nice precursor to it. Now about the main game, still an asbolute classic and my favorite of the old games. From the jump that opening in the city is so much more grand than anything in the original, its such a step above, its shocking. Everything about that opening is perfect, captures the feel of a city in ruins so well, and showcases how much more detailed RE2 is compared to the first. So many more zombies on screen, much better animations, more background effects, the voice acting in general is a massive step up. RE2 is one of those magical sequels that improves on the original in almost every way.

Then we get into the RPD, what a location. I might still give the edge in design and in freedom to explore to the mansion... but RPD is really close to it. Its just more exciting, the lickers show up so fast, they are the hunter equivalent in this game so right away everything is more dangerous. I love the choices you get to make about closing the window shades and picking up the backpack or the machine gun, the zapping system was brilliant. This game is more guided than the first, forcing you down a more set path but man does it unfold so well and even when backtracking new events pop up, the balance of action to exploring has never been better. The puzzles could absolutely be better, it has the worst puzzles of the three PS1 games.
Once you get into the sewers it becomes extremely linear, again I think the ebb and flow of the action, the bosses, the new locations work so well that its acceptable to be a little more linear. There was one really cheap moment in the sewers with the valve, if you dont remember to bring it you will have to backtrack rather annoyingly to get it. I think the lab's atmosphere is incredible, the best lab in the series history. The giagantic plant stairs is one of my favorite backgrounds in the series. Once the alarms go off and that music kicks in, oh man it doesn't get much better.
Then comes side B, this is the game entering hard mode. It waste no time getting you back in the RPD and changing things up. Not only do you get to see the new sections of whichever charatcer you didn't pick but you also get Mr.X. He is not a stalker like in the remake, he is preprogrammed to show up at specific moments to scare the shit out of you. When he did the double burst of the walls the first time I played I screamed and dropped the controller. I was petrified the rest of the game that he would burst through any wall at any time. There is a lot more bursting through objects in scenario B, in general it plays with expectations to deliver a harder more intense scenario. The ways your choices can affect the second playthrough is so brilliant. My favorite is what happens to Ivy if you activate the spary that you think will kill them only to find out it makes them all posionous.
I love the characters, the story was basic but still memorable, the action and music is at its best. I had an absolute blast playing this game. This is everything classic RE should be and its still one of the greatest games ever made.

Resident Evil 3 is an interesting one because it was one of two games in development. So RE2 is released, its an absolute masterpiece and now we await the next one. Word comes out of a true next gen RE game for the Dreamcast, I lose my mind cause I am extremely excited for the DC and the graphics are going to be mindblowing. But at the same time we get the annooucement of Resident Evil 3 starring Jill in Raccoon City being chased by Nemesis. A 3rd PS1 game wasn't the worst thing but it wasnt a NEXT GEN RE game, it quickly became apparent that RE3 was like a quick side game to bridge the gap between RE2 and the big showcase game, Code: Veronica. And so I wasn't as excited to play RE3 like I was RE2, it felt a lot like more of the same. Having a lot of the pre release media show you returning to the RPD didn't help either, it kept feeling like more of the same. I bought it at release and loved the opening intro and greatly enjoyed the game, yeah it was a step back to RE2 but still had some great ideas. It was the first time I felt slight disappointment, it wasn't THE EVENT that the first two were. But it was a nice entry to tide me over until Code: Veronica hit.

This was a fun game to complete, its so fast paced and really pushes you to maximize heath and ammo, at least at the start. For sure the hardest of the three PS1 games because of Nemesis constantly chasing you and the amount of enemies. Of course the introduction of series staples like quick turn and auto aim is great. To this day I still have no clue how to do the dodge move, it just works sometimes and other times it does not. By far the star of the show is Nemesis, just an incredible enemy and byy far the best in the entire series, the way this game works him into so much of the game is remarkable. Plus the randomization helps keep the game fresh between runs and even save reloads. When that creepy being hunted music is on I was on my toes, freaking out if he was coming or not. In this run I did decide to fight him a few times to at least get the better shotgun, the fact that you get special rewards for downing Nemesis is another layer to the gameplay. That with the ammo choices and live selection really empowers the player to try to play different ways in the absense of a second character or storyline. Do I perfer this method to having two characters, no, I like RE1 and 2 more for its different runs.
As much as the action is very well done and RE3 has the best puzzles of the PS1 games and some of the best ones of the series, it lacks in the level design a bit. I feel RE3 is about pushing forward, relentless attack on the player to keep going, that means the exploration part takes a hit. A lot of the game feels more like a central area with long straight paths coming out of it. You pick one of those paths, run it to the end, get what you need then return to the central spot. Gone is the big maze like central hub that is a center piece of the series, to me thats the biggest knock on this game and why it isnt one of my top RE games. There were a few rooms where the item you need to progress is literally in the same room, or in a room next door. There are some standout areas like the clock tower but thats pretty short. Dead factory was pretty cool but not as good as either of the first two labs. For me, the classic formula needs to have a bunch of keys, lots of hallways, locked doors and running back and forth as you strategically clear areas you use a lot. This game doesn't really do that, you just fight what is in front of you, or run in the case of Nemesis. It also didn't introduce to many new monsters, mostly just Nemesis, gravedigger and the drain deimos which are boring compared to the hunters and lickers. How amazing Nemesis is used does make up for the lack of new monsters but it is noticable.
One thing that was apparent in this session is how much the remake failed, holy shit, what a difference. This version is so much better and not just with how great Nemesis works, the content was butchered. No Clock tower, no park, no dead factory or at least didn't have the personality of it. I do enjoy the variety of locations the game has, they really did a good job fleshing out the city. The story is pretty basic but showcases how messed up Umbrella is and finally brings in how the government responds to all these events. There is this really cool battle depicted in the background between US special forces and Tyrants which I wish was explored more in the remake. The nuke was the ending of the Raccoon City trilogy, ending it with a bang; the epilogues also serve as a closing point to the RC trilogy. Those epilogues are interesting reading them now, especially Ada which says "this was the last time I use the name Ada Wong" well shes Ada in 4 lol. More hints that the series changed direction so much with the RE4 reset, oh well. Oh another great part of the game is Mercenaries, the best mini game of the old era and because of it we had the amazing future Mercenery modes.
All in all another great RE game, even when they weren't exactly what I wanted they were still great classic games. The level of quality between RE games and other survival horror games of the time was pretty big. So next up one of my favorites and one of the most debated games in the series, Code Veronica.

Code Veronica, this one was special, to me personaly this was the height of RE mania. So as I mentioned in the RE3 write up RE3 and CV were sort of revealed together, RE3 being a quick follow up and not moving the story forward was clearly the "side game". Code Veronica was the true sequel RE2 desevred, next gen graphics, brand new story months after the Raccoon City incident, and a scale the series has never seen before. Plus it stars RE1 and RE2 heroes tying the entire series together, not to mention the return of the series greatest villian. CV was RE to the max, my hype for this game was through the roof, partly because of how enamored I was with the Dreamcast, everything on it felt so mindblowing and RECV would be no exception.
It was also around this time that I was getting very active on gaming message boards on Gamestop and board that was called Everything Resident Evil. There I became part of a long standing RE fandom, I met people I still chat with today, we eventually spun off and became the fansite Biohaze. Code Veronica was when I felt the RE lore was blown wide open, finally we escape Raccoon City and now the entire world is part of this zombie soap opera. Umbrella's history was expanded so much, our heroes becoming globe trotting freedom fighters and the villains began to have major personalities, including the best move the series ever did which was bringing back Wesker to have an on going villian and rivalry. I remember how amazing it was to play as him in the battle game and see a logo HCF, who is this, a rival company to Umbrella, what did that mean! We discussed and analyzed every aspect of the lore on that board, the fandom was so alive, the future of the series so exciting. In terms of one game RE4 still holds my place for most hyped RE game, but in terms of fandom and lore Code Veronica time was my favorite.

This game gets a lot of shit, I get the complaints, they are valid but I do think they will hit people differently depending on what you want out of the game and your experience level with RE. For the first few hours I was starting to feel like huh maybe I was wrong and this game is kind of bland. Don't get me wrong, the start is still impressive, the graphics still get me, I will always remember the first time playing it. Sure it looks odd now but I kind of like the exaggerated colors and that Dreamcast look that games had. The opening CG is still impressive and leans into the action series RE has become. Yes new mechanics from RE3 are missing, whatever, RE2 is the best of the old bunch and it was missing all those too; level design and survival horror aspect is what matters here. While the games map is the largest in the series it doesnt have many choices in where to go. Very few times do you get a key or item that lets you pick between two or more paths which was a staple of the first two games. Instead you get an item and find your way to what it opens and so on, this also results in quite a bit of backtracking, more so than usual. The first Claire section does have some long treks that are annoying but the game keeps the pressure on with many enemies, some which repopulate after specific points. This game really tries to have moments happen as you explore every area piece by piece with cutscenes, weird traps, enemy surprises and so on. There is plenty of ammo so I never felt that much in danger but somehow a bunch of players get stuck without ammo, not sure what they are doing, all in all this is a pretty easy game in desperate need of a harder mode.
Once the tyrant shows up the game really picks up steam, you get a sort of end game escape sequence in the middle of the game. Much has been said about the tyrant on the plane fight, yes if you SUCK at managing ammo you can be screwed here. Still its a neat fight where you have to use the environment to kill him, I enjoyed it a lot. Then you are off to antartica and a much better location with less running large distances and more of hallway back and forth which I love. Chris' section is brilliant, the level design of the island really begins to shine when you see old paths being blocked, new locations being opened up and it becomes a lot more like the mansion/RPD sticking to just the military base which lowers the backtracking. You do need to remember where everything is though, it can be easy to forget how to reach a certain room but thats part of genre. The best non boss enemies show up again, I loved seeing the hunters return and I appreciated the new drones that sweep the halls for you. Once Chris gets to Antartica again you see the level change with huge new sections opening up. When I get into the recreated mansion I still remember my reaction the first time I saw it, the classic mansion recreated in full 3D with new graphics, I was in love (little did I know what was soon coming); moments like that made CV really feel like a love letter to the whole series up to that point. The Steve boss fight is a mess and the checkpoint is horrendous, I give you that but they had the balls to kill off a playable character, very rare for this series. First person aiming is used for the first time in the series, a really cool gameplay addition. Oh I loved having the 3D items back to be examined, big RE1 vibes. Dual weilding guns is cool as hell, this game gets some shit for missing mechanics but it does have some interesting original ones. The way the "zapping" system works is pretty well done with quite a few items that can be left for Chris but its no where as in depth as what RE2 achieved, still it's a nice call back.
The X version which I played here of course gives us more Wesker which is always a good thing. I love the story in CV, its officially when RE embraces being an action horror extravaganza. Chris is jumping into a fighter jet like its a random car in a parking lot, every thing is over the top, and it all fits the lore so well. Ashfords make for a compelling twisted villain duo who have their own history which added so much to the lore. The final hours is awesome cutscene after awesome cutscene, Wesker hamming it up as he fights Chris in an epic duel setting up the big RE5 showdown and kind of emphasises just how weird of a side story RE4 was. CV was the bridge from the OG trilogy to all the action games that came after. Oh and the music! It's so good, the CV theme song remains my favorite theme of any one RE game. I loved playing this game again, it hit every single note I want from a RE game. The game is lacking in post game content, the battle mode is cool especially for its first person mode (did you know the entire game was supposed to have a first person option but that was removed) but it's over pretty fast. No unlockable difficulty mode really hurts though at the time that was basically the series norm. This game remains amazing, forget the haters, it's as pure a classic RE game as it gets.

So this one is an odd one for me because it should be an all time favorite. The original is so near and dear to my heart, I love the location so much and wanted to see it done with modern graphics so much so that the small mansion in CV blew me away. So when this remake was annouced it was a dream come true. The switch to GC caused all kinds of drama, I was always team Sony but hey I went where the series went and bought a Gamecube partly because of it. The previews looked mindblowing, the pre rendered backgrounds were stunning, the models incredible, a huge leap over CV. Then came the information on all the additions, it truly sounded perfect. And I can see that it kind of is, the remake is without a doubt the culmination of the old school RE formula, perfected in a way that only Mikami can do. But at release I played it a few times and dropped it... I never replayed this game as much as the past games. I played it a few times but didn't do all the extras, I don't even replay it all that often. Why is this near perfect version of RE not a favorite of mine, maybe it was franchise fatigue, I don't know.

I played as Chris to have maximum difficulty, honestly its more annoying than anything with the limited slots, but hey it was still intense and fun. Every gameplay change is pretty much for the better, the added rooms are compelling and flesh out the mansion well. The change in how items are rearranged pushes for more exploration and that combined with crimson heads hightens the tension of exploring. I think the whole burning the bodies could be done a little better, having a whole slot just for gas seems like a waste so I just leave the bodies and deal with it later. The game starts off rough with limited ammo at the start but like in most RE games by the end I was rambo, had plenty of ammo for every hunter and chimera. The puzzles are much improved over the original, boss battles are better, what they did to the water tank is easily the most improved moment. Even with all those enhancements they still keep so much of the originals identity, probably more so than any other remake. Even the oddities like two cranks, ball rolling sewers, bad big box pushing segments, all recreated perfectly. The only thing missing is the second floow library area which was changed for a much more dramatic Yawn battle.
Lisa is of course a big addition but doesn't add too much. She "chases" you in a few locations but she is hardly a threat, she is way too slow and its too easy to get around her. I do love the addition of the forest in the back, her shack and the new caverns below but as a boss she was just ok. The story as a whole works better as the dialogue is fixed to make sense, its still cheesy but not bad B movie bad, BUT it did lose some of its charm. The graphics are incredible BUT the prerendered backgrounds are so color less at times, I feel what the mansion gained in atmosphere it lost in character. I love the bright colors of the original, the hallways that really pop, in this game everything kind of looks brown or dark green. Then there is the pacing, the original is fast and breezy while the remake is slow and plodding. That right there is where I think my disconnect with this game happens, I still think of how the original feels as I play and sort of long for its quickness.
I still see this games greatness. Everything that I love about the formula is here and done better than say CV which handled it rather messy. It has the best location of the series, the mansion has yet to be topped. But as I played it still didn't excite me as much as RE2 or CV, I think it lacks some energy that the sequels brought. I am a sucker for action so the more action movie style pacing and endings of 2 and CV hit me in a way that the ending of this one kind of bores me. My personal preference has not changed, I know this game is technically better than CV, but I still enjoy playing CV more. That said I will move this game above the original, I like to say I like the original more but man does this game just blow it away.
My rankings so far:
RE2
RECV
REmake
RE1
RE3
Gaiden

This is where I started to think RE was on a decline. Lets start at the beginning though, this was announced as an N64 game first. I remember screenshots in various magazines showing Rebecca and Billy on a train, the dual character system was always a thing from the start. It looked interesting but for some reason never really got me that excited. For one I did not have an N64 and did not want one, and second it always felt like a strange idea, RE1 didn't need a prequel. And if you are going to do Bravo team where are they? There were more exciting RE games coming out around the time so I never thought much of RE0. It sort of disaapeared for a while and then resurfaced as part of the capcom games for Gamecube. Resident Evil remake being announced and shown at the same time as the new Zero took out most of the hype for Zero, I much rather play the REmake.
REmake was great, beloved entry, about as good a send off to the old RE style as you can get. I felt like I had my fill with the old style after that, problem was they had one more game coming soon after and thats where Zero felt like such a dissapointment. I remember the day it came out, i bought it, read the manual as I always did and sat there thinking I'm just not as excited.

Lets start with a positive, the game looks great! The train section is actually really well done and introduces the concepts around working two characters and sharing items between them. Ok some cool ideas can come of this... or some annoying ones that leave you wondering why they added this mechanic and never did anything that interesting with it. Hey you can drop items now, no item boxes, that might work... or it becomes a major hassle as carrying all your gear from one major location to another is a huge pain. Also only having six slots per character makes for so much menu work. Every new idea this game had makes it worse than the past RE games and that is what ultimately holds the game back.
At it's core its very good, it still has all the elements of a Resident Evil game; compare this to so many other survival horror games and its way better. It's just weak for this stellar franchise. The training facility is actually a well done location with plenty of rooms to explore and good old classic level design. I was playing on hard which removed nearly all health items, man I was feeling the fear or impending doom, getting to a save room felt so good. There is a decent amount of variety to the enemies though they can be annoying. Bandersnatches get shit on but the leech guys are much worse, not only do they do the long arm whip thing but they also grab you. Killing them takes forever, even using the fire which should be their weakness. Thankfully they arent around all that much and sometimes you can just run past them.
Bosses are also really interesting... but again there is one that is awful, extremely awful, that damn bat. The bat itself is cool, its when it spawns it's shit children bats that the game freaks out and becomes nearly broken as you have auto aim and you cant ever aim at what you want. The rest of the bosses are pretty cool, loved the scorpion and fighting a tyrant is always fun. Leech queen was like Nemesis again, kind of unoriginal and worse cause you just have to distract the boss while the computer does the rest of the work.
Where the game really fell apart for me was after the training facility, CV gets shit on for potential locking of games due to bad inventory placements but holy shit this is worse. With no warning sometimes one of your characters is gone along with their entire inventory. Had all the best guns with Billy, oops too bad... oh and here is a tyrant fight with no warning! Save points are after the boss not before, it makes no sense. The final areas are a series of locations with a bunch of running back and forth, moving a bunch of items around cause you always need that random stupid thing you left somewhere else. It also lacks the excitement of a CV or RE2, very bland and uninspired final locations. Plus they make no sense, RE0 has a magic turntable tunnel that somehow connects multiple locations vertically that cannot physically be on top of each other. Again none of it is that bad, its a good survival horror game just a damn frustrating RE game.
The story being crap doesn't help either. Lets tell the prequel to RE1 and cover nothing not even the bravo team. Instead there is a new Umbrella guy, oh hes dead but there are some leeches who turn into a young him but dressed like some reject cult leader who sings opera music. It all felt like a bad FF boss snuck into the RE world, did not fit at all. Billy is at least an interesting character, shame he gets wiped from the franchise after this. Rebecca goes through so much only to act like a total rookie in the original. Hell nothing connects to the original, it utterly fails in being a prequel.
My opinion of this game has not really changed, when I finished it way back when I knew it was the worst of the series at the time. It was when I realized that old RE is done, the series needs a change. I am right there again. I had my fun with the classics, but after this I am so happy I am moving onto action RE. This remains toward the bottom of the series list. I was hoping replaying it would let me enjoy it more, maybe think I was too harsh on it. Nope, its definetly the weakest one. I did get to try Wesker mode for the first time so that was fun, seems kind of gimmick like, whats with the eye powers. Anyway I'm glad it's done and now onto the great one.

And here we are, the greatest action game ever made. After RE0 I knew it was time for a change and RE4 was promising to do just that. Starring Leon it would focus on psychological horror with Leon being invected and hook man appearing to chase you... wait what. RE3.5 sure was something but it felt weird from the trailers, I didn't want silent hill like "ghosts" in my RE. The camera looked more dynamic, it was going to have full 3D worlds to run around but still felt slow like past games. Hey it looked really nice so I was still excited.
Time goes on and RE4 dissapears for a while then reimerges in a Game Informer article with a completely new look and gameplay style. I remember getting this issue because word broke out that RE4 was going for a full genre change so I had to see the issue for myself. What I read in that magazine seemed impossible, the images looked like a game from the future. The article went on to descibe the legendary village attack opening, Leon bursting throw windows, battling hordes of enemies who crash through doors, pull up ladders, throw weapons at you. Plus a chainsaw weilding maniac is chasing you all over. A full village to freely explore, action like we have never seen before. It being in words let my imagination go wild, crazy thing is when we saw it in motion it was even better than I could imagine. Helming it all was Shinji Mikami, scrapping the previous version and taking over to reinvent the series he birthed. Very few games ever led to me having this level of anticipation. I was not sad for the loss of the classic gameplay, I was 100% on board with playing a new kind of action game.
My first time playing it came from the Gamestop demo disc, I still remember getting it, racing home and finally playing this magical new kind of game. Playing it was better than I could imagine. That one village level was better and more dynamic than any action game I have ever played. I replayed that demo a hundred times or more, its up there as maybe the best demo ever. Everything about the lead up to this game was incredibly hype inducing. No way it can live up to this mega game I created in my head... oh but it did... and it BLEW AWAY every expectation I had. I never thought a game could be this amazing.

Oh and guess what, the game is still perfect. I wrote most of my thoughts on why its a perfect action game here. I played this on a new system, my switch 2, cause why not, might as well play this game on every device imaginable. I have not played this much since the remake came out so I have that game more fresh in my mind which allowed me to make some interesting comparisons. For one, holy shit that remake is incredible. Many of the specific combat scenarios are more fleshed out and just better designed in the remake, its extremely impressive. That said there is a flow to the OG that is unmatched, the remake has some slow moments, annoying moments, the original has none of that. Plus the tone of the story in the original is just perfect. It is going for this cliche action movie vibe that is self aware, kind of takes itself seriously enough to feel authentic but still just enough over the top. Mikami and his crew nailed everything and to this day it shows.
I am still in awe that this series went from fixed cameras, limited inventory and basic combat to this, a brand new kind of game. This game was unlike anything and I don't mean it invented over the shoulder aiming, some games had it but not done in this manner. I mean all of it, a third person shooter with dynamic environments, context sensitive actions, QTE moments, perfect hit detection and reactions, brilliant inventory and upgrade system. Once again RE birth a totally new kind of game and to this day it is still the best of its kind. Now I think back at how common the third person action shooter is, all because of this one game. The controls to me still work perfectly fine, its still traditional RE tank controls but you can aim freely and it works just fine. Having played this game in VR I do miss the dynamic ways you can fight in VR, but the game is designed around its restrictive controls, it works in both ways.
I loved playing it again for the who knows what time. Starting from scratch, upgrading my favorite weapons. Looking for all those hidden treasures, unlocking figures in the shooting gallery and of course the amazing Mercenaries mode. I did not play Seperate Ways, I don't think I have time, never cared to much for this version of it. Still it shows just how much content this game had. What a game, still perfect.

I was so blown away by RE4. I couldn't believe how amazing it was.

Resident Evil 5 was a massive success, the best selling game of the series up to that point. But the series was in a strange spot, it took 4 years for 5 to come after 4 and another 3 years for 6 to hit. Revelations and some chronicles games came out in that time but for the most part it was the most time with the least games. Resident Evil 6 is as lost and confused as this series has ever been, if 5 was hinting at following trends, 6 was Capcom completely giving into all western trends with no regard to any quality concerns. RE6 was a frankenstein monster of a game that feels like all the worst parts of the action games of that era, so over the top with little care for good design.
I don't even recall the marketing to this game, I do know the image that they used to sell us on it, Chris and Leon holding guns at each other. Was that cool, yeah but did they really showcase what makes the game good, I don't recall. RE5 I feel ended my love for the lore of RE, once Wesker died and the umbrella saga ended I didn't care as much what came next. I was more interested in a fun action game and RE6 was looking off in a way. I do remember the demo, it felt too slow at times, it was Leon's first part at the university. So many forced walking sections, a total pain in the ass to replay but there was a few sections where you get to cut loose against zombies and I did enjoy learning the mechanics. RE6 does have great action game mechanics, a bunch of hidden ones too as the game does a horrible job of teaching you how to play. Overall though 6 has a very dynamic dodge and melee system which is very unique the issue are the scenarios the game gives you fail to make great use of it. Well I didn't know that yet, the demo showed some promise, I liked that zombies are back, the new mechanics are great. It has Chris and Leon and the son of Wesker was to be playable as well.
The game seemed to be so ambitious. After playing it I can see where the devs probably thought they were making the ultimate action game. 4 campaigns, non stop action with loads of environments, tons of enemy variety, full coop and even online invasions. This game has it all!!! Yeah well throwing everything at a game with no real plan to make it work well or have good design leads to a mess and that's what RE6 is. When reviews came out my worst fears were realized, RE has lost its way. It's become a joke, a franchise past its prime. How did we go to inventing a genre to being one of the worst examples of the excess of that genre in less than 10 years. RE6 left the franchise broken, it would take 5 years for 7 to reinvent the series and save it. In that time we had Rev 2 and some crappy spin offs, easily the worst period of RE history.
When I played this game back in the day I didn't think it was awful. It was definitely the worst in the series but still a fun action game. I particularly liked playing agent hunt mode and mercenaries. I knew it had plenty of issues but mechanically it was sound. I did never fully replay it, I would start it up and get bored. It's time to see if I still think it's passable.

Nope this game stinks, I am flabbergasted at the amount of bad game design decisions. Somehow we went from a series where every room and section was carefully designed to create a unique feel, have the environment and the enemy selection act together to give the player a fun area to battle in. All that is gone, level design out the window. Basically every level is just flat or is a giant sprawling mess of random cover spots. Expertly deciding who and where to shoot, that every shot matters kind of gameplay from 4 and 5 gone. Enemies just swarm from all over and most have guns which is just so stupid.
You have good action game mechanics, it genuinely is interesting and unique in the third person realm to have a game with dodges, quick shots, multiple contextual melee attacks, counters and so on. The combat is THERE, the design is TRASH. I can maybe count in one hand the amount of great sections where the mechanics and level design work well together to create something that feels like a quality action sequence. The majority of the time some terrible idea gets in the way, whether it's bad direction where the goal is not clearly specified. Or tedious moments with large levels where you repeat mashing buttons on something while the other character protects.
Leon's campaign I feel is the worst. There is so much start and stopping, so may QTEs, so many forced walking sections and so much boring crap to get through. He has some good moments like fending off a zombie horde at a bar, obviously taken from RE4. The church attack with the giant boss lady thing, still kind of messy but hey it's a decent fight. But for all of those you have something crappy like run all the way through the cemetery, ok now there is a dog with a key, run all the way back, ok got the key good now run all the way back to the door. There is a moment in the story that I feel sums up this game rather well. Helena and Leon are on an elevator on the side of a building, they are having a nice quiet moment where she asks him about his history of Ada. Wow actual character development... BOOOM! I missile hits the elevator, it goes flying off of the building, the glass breaks, they jump out and start climbing the cable up the side of the building as a giant T-rex monster chases them. Thats's RE6...
Chris I feel has the best campaign cause at least it feels like it matches the level of action and stupidity. He has the most variety of enemies, they make good use of your combat skills. I think the invisible snake is about as good a boss as the game has even if it's pretty scripted. He also has huge lows like the worst vehicle combat section in a AAA game of that era, it looks like something out of a reject Dreamcast game. Oh god and the entire final battle without a huma partner, horrific, Piers just stands around doing nothing a bunch of times. Chris' storyline is the only one worth a damn, has the only good moment in the entire game, so there is that.
Jake and Sherry, I liked playing as a fake Wesker and getting some neat melee attacks. It's not fleshed out enough though. This campaign feels more like a big chase with way too many QTE stuff and repeated Ustanak fights. I did like the escape from the prison and then that Chinese hotel, more of that please. Oh and as you play more and more campaigns you start to repeat horrible sections over again since they had the whole cross over with other online players thing. Very ambitious, if only it was fun, it's not so it sucks to do it again.
Then you get to Ada and what is this, some half assed attempt at stealth. A shoehorned in coop if you want but it's actually a solo campaign. It just shows how much of a mess this game is, clearly this wasn't well throughout, they just threw in an "agent" that disappears in cutscenes. Her campaign stinks just like the rest, so many annoying moments, repeated sequences and bad bosses.
I used to think the campaign of revelations 1 was worse, I kind of gave RE6 a pass when I first played it cause of all the content and mechanics. Nah this game is pretty bad. Now I am far more tolerant of bad gameplay if the mechanics are interesting, so I don't know if I will say this game is horrible. I rather play an interesting mess than a boring safe game. So while it maybe the worst of the main franchise it's not as low as other horror franchises get. But I can totally see and accept the argument that this game is terrible, I would probably say it's 4-5 range score.
It is wild to see where this franchise ended up, after so much promise, after ushering in a new type of shooter. To get this bloated mess of chased trends, a complete loss of identity. It's no wonder the series went on hiatus for a few years, the damage it did was huge. RE became a joke… it was never a joke. Thankfully 7 did one of the hardest things a game can do, restore faith to a franchise.
That said I will play the two revelation games next. Interesting games that were sprinkled in around this dark time in REs history.

Right before RE6 launched there was another RE game, Revelations exclusively for the 3DS. I really liked my 3DS, I found the 3D to have a really cool effect on games and previously loved all the cool touch screen features of the OG DS. When I saw an exclusive RE is coming to a portable, this new impressive portable at that I was pretty excited. Initial previews showed a game that looked like it could hang graphically with RE5, it was seriously extremely impressive for the handheld. The game featured the return of Jill as the main playable character, as well as have Chris and others join in.
So as a new owner of a new portable decide Revelations was a massive exclusive and I was quite excited for it. I bought it on launch and was immediately blown away at the graphics, for a portable it was kind of mind blowing, the 3D effect also added to the overall impressive package. The campaign itself was cool, especially coming after RE6. It felt so much more old school in that there was a central location to run around hallways, get keys and explore. The episodic way the story is broken down made it perfect for quick sessions on the go. Overall the campaign wasn't that great, I would rank it pretty much at the bottom with RE6 but this game is more than just the campaign.
Raid mode has to be talked about because it is far better than the campaign and I feel what makes the entire game well worth owning, especially back in the day for an amazing experience on the go. Raid mode basically transformed the entire game into a sort of stat based action RPG filled with stats, wild new enemy buffs, loads of unique loot and remixed levels. There is so much quality content here, perfectly tuned to give you that just one more play feel. All in all Revelations is one of the best 3DS games ever made and if you count the entirety of the package and the fact it is all done on a portable it's so impressive. As time goes on and there are the console/PC versions you lose the novelty of the 3DS features and the portable nature of the game. Plus I feel most people will just play the campaign which is rather weak and call it a day. I think it's important to separate a ranking of the campaigns and Rev 1 being near the bottom and the overall game Revelations 1 was at release which was an amazing portable game experience.

For this playthrough I just did the campaign and yeah it's not the best. Revelations 1 suffers from really repetitive gameplay sections, poor hit reaction from enemies, and some really tedious sections (underwater stuff). The story is also a mess of poor revelations trying desperately to be like a shocking TV episode was cliff hanger endings but come out forced and cheesy. It's kind of wild that the backdrop to this game is hey an entire made up city was melted and now the entire planet knows BOWs exists… uhhh kind of a big plot point for some portable entry. It introduces a bunch of terrible characters, Quint being one of the worst, is lines became memes because of how bad it was. I'm happy this is mostly Jill's game, she needs more entries but she has very little to do in this game. No one grows, no one has any real character moments, it is a bad story.
The ship segments where you are exploring new areas and seeing new monsters is good. I would say the collection of new BOWs are impressive and it has some memorable designs and bosses. Every once in a while there is a well design combat scenario like in this shopping area being trapped with a huge chainsaw boss with different floors and windows to get in and out of. But for every one of those you get like 3 complete utter garbage designed sections (usually outside the ship) with random hordes of enemies, usually hunters. Somehow this game takes my favorite BOW and makes them cannon fodder, they come out like roaches in waves and you mindlessly blow them away. I have no clue why there are so many of these sections.
Oh this game also has a dumb scanning mechanic. To find hidden items in the world you have to constantly press a button to go to first person view and look for invisible objects then hold down a button to scan it. You can also scan enemies to get health. It's tedious and hardly adds anything to the game. It just seems for every good idea this game has there is something that holds it back. Now I used to think this campaign is just as bad as RE6 and now playing them back to back, no way, RE6 is a special kind of crap. But I still generally think Rev1 campaign is bottom tier. It lives in this strange half way between old school and action RE and takes a lot of the worst aspects of each and lacks most of the good.

The dark ages, post RE6 was a bad time for this franchise. In one year you had RE6 and Operation RC, as well as Rev 1 which at least was good. Still not the best showing. The franchise would basically be put on ice, for three years NOTHING. The first post RE6 project was a new Revelations entry, this time having the series try its hand at episodic gaming. Revelations 2 would be released in chunks over a month with the first episode being F2P. Not sure if this strategy ending up helping sales, just seemed like an annoyance to me. Like Rev 1 it was episodic story broken in chunks but now with a real one week break which made the TV show like recaps and "next time on" actually matter. I guess the week long break allowed players to really replay these episodes but I like to do that after the entire game, at least the game gave plenty of reasons to replay.
Revelations 2 is really great and a big improvement over the first. After the slop of stories that have come out for this franchise in this time, Rev 2 felt like it had an interesting story to tell with characters that are interesting, grow through the game and a villain that has major ties to the overall mythos. Claire is a fan favorite already but it's the return of Barry that really pushed this game into highly anticipated territory for me as he is my favorite non main RE hero. Barry absolutely lives up to his legacy here with him calling back so many of his iconic lines, acting just as goofy but also a damn hero in every way. This game is fan service all the way through, Anpo and his team understood the assignment and did the best they could with such a limited production. Yes this game was directed by Yasuhiro Anpo which will go on the direct the two masterpiece remakes 2 and 4.
Revelations 2 has some really great ever changing gameplay sequences. Levels are filled with some traps, a few puzzles to solve and great hordes of monsters to fight. Combat is much improved over Rev 1, the bullet hits have impact, our heroes have melee follow-ups and a dodge that works. There are stealth elements with some nice instant backstabbing kills which is something we won't see again until RE4 remake. This game has two characters that can be switched at any time bringing back memories of RE0 but without a lot of the drawbacks. Each character has a specific role, our classic hero is the fighter, has all the guns and does all the combat. The other character, Moira and Natalia, each serve as support and item finders. They sort of replaced the scan from Rev 1 with the skills of the other character, so yeah switching just to find invisible items is annoying but I did like when they helped in combat, mainly Natalia finding weak points.
This game launched to an ok reception, mid 70s. An improvement to RE6 but hardly worthy of this franchise. I think it's rated too low, I feel production limitations hurt it. It's a pretty ugly game, it does have a few tedious sections and does reuse environments between the two mains. Returning is Raid mode though this time it doesn't remix the campaign, instead it's a mission based mode that takes levels from RE6 and sort makes a fake mercenaries mode out of it. It's HUGE, with lots more focus on growing characters, getting new loot and accomplishing high scores. I didn't like this raid mode as much as the one in Rev 1 but it does provide incredible amounts of content.
Ultimately Revelations 2 was a nice reminder that hey RE is still around and when it has a story that's well done it can please fans. Still it was a game that didn't add anything new, more of an amalgamation of a ton of previous RE ideas.

Replaying this right after Rev 1 shows how much of an improvent the combat, level design and scenarios are better in this one. Right off the bat the feel of shooting the enemies feels a lot closer to RE4 and melee follow ups that have impact return. The character switching feels like it has some proper gameplay usage though times it is just a look for hidden item mechanic. What stood out to me was how much your actions in one chapter impacts the switch to Barry, a sort of zapping system like RE2. Plus this is the first RE game is a LONG time to have multiple endings, as I mentioned before this game is like a greatest hits of RE tropes.
Moira is a standout character, she begins as what seems like a generic loud mouth teen but quickly becomes a well fleshed out character with big character growth moments. Sadly I feel that was at the expense of Claire who's charater takes a step back. For some dumb reason they make Claire obsessed with her boss, to the point where Moira has to point out to her how pathetic and crazy she sounds. Also Claire is terrible with Natalia, a complete reversal from how motherly she is in RE2 with Sherry, again to prop up Moira. It's by far the worst version of Claire, also doesn't help that we lose Allison Court.
On the flip side we have Barry's triumphant return, he is PERFECT. Every call back to a RE1 line is brilliant, delivered with the right tone. The voice actor for Barry nailed it, he sounds like the OG Barry just enough. He is the perfect corny dad who can also save your ass in any situation. The final battle is such a crowd pleasing finale, full of our characters being maximum badass, Barry with his iconic "I have this!" line. Everything about the Burtons is just perfect, shame they don't get a spotlight more.
Points to this game for continuing the dangling thread from RE5 about the Wesker children and giving us a new Wesker villian. Sadly Alex does not get enough screen time to really push her into any memorable category. Ultimately she feels a bit wasted, I know they gave her a way to return by using Natalia as a vessel, though not sure whether that is a storyline worth revisiting. I expected more from the next Wesker.
The game has some really standout sections, overall I think the third episode is the best of the bunch, specifically Claire sections. There are some really good bosses and subbosses mixed very well with exciting setpieces that do remind me of a well thought out RE4 section. We have another shootout in the cabin section, well done and with a big boss that can chase you across an entire villiage. Barry's sections are a bit more mechanic heavy with Natalia serving as a way to few weakpoints of enemies and even see some. Those invisible bugs, not my favorite. The entire factory level I feel is one of the best, really well paced with sections building on one another. I think the entire final boss sequence is one of the stronger one in the series.
The game does reuse a ton of sections, its the nature of having two parallel storylines happening in different times but crossing the same locations. If you think of it its like RE2 character swapping but in pieces. The lack of a big budget shows, it looks like a very basic PS3 game and has a few odd bugs and quirks. There were a few annoying sections that I feel could have been better designed but those are far less than in Revelations 1.
I didn't focus much on raid mode, I previous had reached maybe the half way point, mostly with Wesker. It gives a TON of extra content but I really didn't care for the remixed RE6 levels and it being like a poor mercs level. I do love the crazy status effects and different forms of monsters, its a really fun addictive mode. I didn't do the extra episodes this time but I did do them before, the Moira one is better but both are not as good as the main game. I really loved my time with the game, its not as good as the top of the series but it stands firmly above the bad stuff.

I remember a lot more about Revelations 2. I was impressed with the setting of and out of the way forgotten Russian island, with a lot of Soviet era buildings and structures. I definitely give them a lot of props for how creative they were with old flyers and propaganda scattered around the buildings. I'll always be bitter about the ending though because I chose the wrong path, and as a result, got the shit ending... The same damn thing happened to me in RE7. You know what, fuck you Capcom. Fuck you for putting those endings in there. Fuck you for even making it an option.

In 1996 Capcom would release a horror game that would become their most prestigious franchise and influence gaming forever. On March 22 1996 Resident Evil was released in Japan and a week later in America. With its stunning cinematic presentation and thrilling genre defining survival horror gameplay, Resident Evil became a massive hit and has not slowed down. There have been some ups and downs but for the most part the Resident Evil franchise has delivered great gaming experiences, its different eras all have their masterpieces. Next year marks the 30th anniversary of this legendary series, and with it comes the latest entry, Resident Evil Requiem.
I believe this would be a great time to do a full series playthrough ending with RE9. Starting now should give us what I hope is plenty of time to get through every game. This is not a timed thing, please take your time, most of us including me will be playing many other games while doing this. Go at your own pace and play the games you want to play, what constitutes a full series playthrough might be different for different people. For me it at a minimum means the mainline series, I will personally do some of the spinoffs but not all (why would I ever play Umbrella Corps again). Then there are the multitude of different versions and games with multiple ways to beat them, once again I leave it up to you to decide what a completion means to you. For me a game like RE2 is not finished until I do one full scenario A and B to get the true ending, but I don't need to do it with the characters flipped, just once is enough. If you want to go all out and beat every game to 100% more power to you! Want to speed run games, do it!
The whole point is to just enjoy playing Resident Evil games and SHARE your thoughts on them. Rank them as you play, or rank them before you play and change rankings as you go. Play a game in a way you never have before. I never have played the Wesker bonus game in RE0, I plan to do that during this playthrough. I can setup a leaderboard for speed runs if that is something some of you are interested in. We can organize co-op games here as well. The beauty of this series is how many ways there are to enjoy this franchise, let this be a celebration.
