To Bluray or Not to Bluray That, is the question. Twas a warm summer night as Vader stroked his sack

Now I'm screwed. I got my blu ray player as multiregion dvd, region B for Bluray.
Anyhow one some dvds it wont show english subtitles and I have a substantial foreign film collection. Sony wont respond to my customer support inquiries but I have a feeling they will ask for me to upgrade its firmware.
Which factory resets the player, which may negate my multiregion player specs and put it firmly back to Europe only discs.
What can I do? I either find that half my collection is unwatchable because I can't see english subs, or accept the firmware upgrade and find half my collection wont work because its in the wrong region.

Ah well, got Red Cliff special edition. It was cheap-ish and I need to see it eventually. It's like 4 and a half hours long though.
