The story takes place at the very begining, and again at the very end before and after you fight Bowser. It's just three or four short cutscenes, but it's still pretty cool.
I honestly don't know why Miyamoto is against putting more story in SMG 2. It boggles the mind.

I consider those "storybook" scenes to be cutscenes. They sure as hell aren't gameplay!
Personally I love what Miyamoto said. Just have ships come in and lower a giant cake on chains. That's perfect
I dont mind either way but mario games are not about story.
