There is only one Detective Dee, the Koreans made a Detective K, don't get confused.
There are going to make a second Detective Dee film though, it has been confirmed.

I know, but still... I wasn't expecting it to be so brutal and violent. In part I'm grateful (After almost 10 years of shitty PG-13 action and horror films we had to go back to the dark side with films like Dredd 3D, Martyrs, A Serbian Film, Piranha, The Raid, Drive Angry, Grindhouse, Hobo With A Shotgun, The Expendables, etc.) but it was still a bit jarring.
I read ages before that I Saw the Devil was censored in Korea and had parts cut so I always knew the western version would have those bits in and it would be violent. I'm not a fan of violence for violence sake but I thought it was a powerful tool in this movie and completely suited the nihilistic tone of serial killer pic and in general some asian cinema which is a lot of the time about tragedy and futility.

It looks good. I assume this is Rza's first movie, interesting to see how it turns out. It's got Russel Crowe, that got my attention.
I saw a trailer for that a long time ago. I'm always skeptical whenever they try and do a western kung fu pic. I like Van Dammes stuff though. There are so many more authentic and better choreographed Chinese and even Korean martial arts films you should see first like True Legend, SPL aka Killzone in the USA, or The Gallants.

I usually avoid remakes since I almost always find them inferior. I saw the remakes of Infernal Affairs, Let the Right One In, the Ring and others all of which are considered good but found them flat and ultimately disappointing compared to the originals
Spike Lee and Samuel L. Jackson... This is either going to be gloriously good, or gloriously bad. Either way it should be awesome.

And thereby potentially don't suck

He only plays the dude who gets his teeth pulled out.

Yeah, but I guess it also depends on what you see first. I would assume that those who saw the Departed first would watch Infernal Affairs and prefer the one they saw first, same goes for the Ring.
REVIEW: WOLF CHILDREN Further Proves That Mamoru Hosoda Isn't The New Hayao Miyazaki
"Wolf Children establishes Mamoru Hosoda as a master animator and storyteller in his own right. He is impressively capable of telling greatly different kinds of stories and using wildly different styles to tell them. If the triumph of Summer Wars comes from its use of dazzling and imaginative visuals to tell the complex story, then the beauty of Wolf Children lies in its simplicity and gentleness. It is a film that quietly whispers in your ears and softly tugs at your heartstrings."
This guy is the best animation director working today outside of Miyazaki.
^Japan*.
In regards to teeth guy, well at least that scene will be good! Samuel L. Jackson getting his teeth pulled out...hell yeah.
Review: THE THIEVES, a Cool and Confident Korean Blockbuster
The most anticipated Korean film of the year, with its dazzling cast and international locations, opened late last month and has since become the biggest domestic box office behemoth in years. The Thieves, Choi Dong-hoon's fourth feature, following The Big Swindle (2004), Tazza: The High Rollers (2006), and Woochi: The Taoist Wizard (2009), is his most ambitious yet. It is a vibrant and complex heist movie with one of the most high profile casts ever assembled for a local production.
An entertaining film that is at the same time cool, fun, clever and pulse-raising, it's exactly what audiences are looking for to beat the summer heat. It's packed with great dialogue, teeming with edge-of-your-seat moments and looks fantastic to boot. With 11 million spectators and counting, it seems that The Thieves knew exactly how to break into Korea's imagination, let's see if it can do so elsewhere as well.

THE GUILLOTINES Fly In First Proper Teaser
It has been a long and winding road for Peter Chan produced action film The Guillotines to make it to the big screen. The project - which started as a remake of 1976 film Master Of The Flying Guillotine before morphing into something else - made its way through multiple directors and a last minute production shut down before finally coming together but, having settled on director Andrew Lau in the end, the first proper teaser has now arrived. And, yes, you get to see the titular weapon in action, albeit briefly.
Nameless Gangster (2012) Movie Review
All of this combines to make “Nameless Gangster” not only the best Korean gangster film in several years, but also one of the best films in general. Gripping, immaculately directed and anchored by Choi Min Sik’s towering performance, it stands as a near masterpiece of the crime genre, and proves again what can be achieved with a great script and investment in character.
I watched Detective Dee and the Case of the Phantom Flame. Very nice. The plot is kind of similar to Hero though, is it not?
Also .... SPOILERS FOLLOWING FOR ANYONE WHO HASN'T SEEN IT AND THINKS THEY MAY WANT TO

Since a sequel is confirmed, is it safe to assume he didn't die of the flame bug bites?
I'm quite excited. I love the RZA and apparently Tarantino and Eli Roth are also involved somehow, same as the RZA was involved in Kill Bill. He has done several cameo appearances in films, my favourite being in Ghost Dog for which he also wrote the amazing soundtrack
