Outland is a sidescrolling platforming action game with one hell of an awesome twist. Take a Metroid like structure, well not to the extreme of Metroid, most of its levels are self contained. Now add sword combat like a Castlevania game. But make the focus on platforming while using your special power which is to turn into a different color.

The way this mechanic works is that if you turn blue now you can walk on blue platforms, now you can absorb all blue energy attacks but you cant hurt blue enemies. Turn red and now you can walk on red platforms but fall right through blue ones, you can absorb red attacks but get hurt by blue ones and now you can attack blue enemies but not red ones.

So you can see how some devious scenarios can come about using this simple but complex mechanic. Some of the games best moments involve platforming where you are switching colors mid jump to make platforms and walls appear or disappear. Combat is thrilling when you have multiple colored enemies attacking at once forcing you to switch from colors to either be offensive or defensive.

The game world is large enough for a downloadable game offering about 6 hours of gameplay. There are secrets to find and the game has an excellent difficulty curve. It keeps you hooked from start to finish. Some epic boss fights round out this great title.

This is one of the best downloadable titles this gen. Any fan of 2D action adventure games should absolutely check it out.
