Play as a terrorist blob that tries to take down a government.

De Blob is a, actually I don't know what it is, a platformer with a Katamari like twist maybe. You play as a colored blob who needs to paint the black and white world with color. You roll over color canisters to become a certain color, mix two colors to get another, hopefully you know how this works. Everything you touch becomes colored in whatever color you currently are. Each level is a pretty large open space that slowly unlocks in sections as you gain more points, by coloring stuff and doing missions. You have a timer to reach the final goal, as you complete objectives you gain more time. Each level has plenty of objects to find or color, you may find them all or ignore them though getting everything is where a lot of the fun lies. It's like Katamari in that it gets addicting to try to color the entire level in the set time, as you do so more of the level opens up.

You control the blob with the stick but you jump with waggle. I dont know what idiot thought that jumping by shacking was better than pressing A but he should be fired. It's not that big a deal, it just makes jumping a tiny bit more frustrating. The jumping itself has issues cause I guess they were going for that blob feel, it sticks to walls and bounces off of them many times in angles you dont want it to take. Sometimes the camera is not positioned in the right way you want it to be while you are rolling along side a wall and you try to jump off but you go a direction you don't want to. Or you get stuck into a wall when you want to jump over it. Don't expect Mario levels of precision here nor does the game need it. For the most part there are almost never pits of death or any real kind of platforming required. The times there are there will be conveniently placed targets for you to lock on and auto jump on top of them.

The levels are populated with enemies that try to hit you with ink. These enemies never become much of a threat. You get a new enemy every few levels but none of them add to the difficulty or change up the gameplay. Missions play a major part in each level. There are 4 types: racing, combat, painting and one where you need to have a large amount of paint where you deposit into a reactor of some kind. They are all very basic missions, the most complex would be the painting ones where the game asks you to paint certain structures a certain color. Never are these missions too difficult and they never really change things up.

Once you play the first few levels you have basically seen all the variety the game will have for the full 10 levels. It's a game with very few ideas, luckily the gameplay is fun. A game with paint could have had all sorts of puzzles. There are times where you need to hop along buildings while coloring them a certain color, well every color you need is always right in front of you, there is no thinking involved. A better way to do this would be to put the colors in certain spots where you would have to figure out in which order you would need to paint the buildings, make it a puzzle. They could have done so much more, throw in a boss fight or two, make more missions, make it a challenge. This game is like the first Assassin's Creed, its interesting to mess around in the world but there needs to be more content, more variety. There are two missions per level that open up after you complete it, these are like expanded versions of the missions you find in level. Some actually offer a slight challenge but most are over in less than a minute. They could have easily made like 50 of these and made them like challenge missions.

The game is beautiful to look at, it has a great art style that fits perfectly with the wii. Obviously it's a colorful game, if you want you can pretend this game is a metaphor for next gen games being all brown, devoid of color and this happy platformer coming along showing how gaming could have color. I enjoyed the music a lot, it's a different kind of style of music, there is one spanish beat that is fantastic. It's a well made game and a really fun game to play I just wanted more from it. They got something that works, there could be one hell of a de Blob sequel if done right.

Awesome review Yoda.

Anything that may have pushed the boundaries of what you needed to learn to do in the game perhaps was left out as to not make things frustrating due to the inadequate controls and camera.

You nailed it.
