Burial at Sea Episode 2 does what any great DLC should do, serve as new kind of gameplay experience within the confines of the full game. Episode 1 was basically the exact same gameplay just transferred to a different location. In this episode Elizabeth is the main character and she is not as combat savy as Booker which forces the player to play a lot more stealthy. Essentially this is the stealth version of Bioshock Infinite. Armed with a crossbow and a new vigor that lets you see through walls and be invisible; Elizabeth has all the tools she needs to avoid direct confrontations. Melee only effects enemies if you sneak up on them and instantly knock them out. Offensive vigors are gone. The only weapons you have is the pistol, shotgun and radar range, making any open combat feel like a death sentence. So instead it is best to hide in the shadows and use stealth tactics, mostly involving your crossbow and its arrows. A favorite of mine was to use a noise arrow that brings all enemies to the source of the noise then to shoot a gas arrow that knocks them all out. As the game goes on enemies start to come in different outfits that don't allow certain attacks to work on them. An armored dude won't take any damage from projectiles. A guy wearing a gas mask can't be gassed. These changes mostly happen in the last half and in reality you can pretty much stick to what was working for you from the start till the end with not much difficulty. I for one loved the action in Infinite so it is a bit disheartening for this game to feel just like any other stealth game. It's a shame that not even the tears make it into this episode. While the gameplay isn't the best, the story and events you see more than make up for it. Unlike the first episode where it felt you were just watching some random one shot episode, this one feels like a series finale. The entire series story comes together in spectacular fashion tying a nice ribbon around the series and serving as a final goodbye to Irrational Games. If you enjoy the Bioshock lore this is an absolute must play. Burial at Sea Episode 2 is a fantastic experience that feels like a miniature full fledged sequel to Infinite. Even though the stealth focus is not my favorite it at least feels fresh and not a copy paste job like the first episode was. |
